AMD has officially released the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition, a desktop processor equipped for the first time with two stacked 3D V-Cache blocks. Priced at $899, it is aimed primarily at developers and content creators.

AMD doubles down: the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 has twice as much cache as its competitors

Expected for several months, the processor began to be the subject of rumors as early as August 2025. AMD had already produced prototypes of double-stacked V-Cache chips on its Zen 4 architecture, but had until now maintained a single-stack configuration in its commercial products. On April 22, 2026, the firm finally confirmed the launch of the 9950X3D2.

Increasing technical characteristics

The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 is based on the Zen 5 architecture and offers 16 cores as well as 32 threads, like its predecessor the 9950X3D. The base frequency remains fixed at 4.3 GHz, but the maximum boost frequency drops slightly to 5.6 GHz, compared to 5.7 GHz on the 9950X3D AMD has not officially explained this difference, but it could be explained by the additional consumption linked to the second cache stack.

On this point precisely, the TDP climbs to 200 W, or 30 W more than the 9950X3D and the 9950X, which were both at 170 W. This is the highest value ever announced for a consumer AM5 processor.

The main argument of the 9950X3D2 lies in its cache. Each of the two CCD chiplets has 64 MB of 3D V-Cache memory as well as 32 MB of integrated L3 cache, which brings the total L3 cache to 192 MB. By adding the 16 MB of L2 cache, we obtain a total cache of 208 MB.

Compatibilité et overclocking

AMD wanted to specify that the 9950X3D2 remains compatible with all motherboards equipped with the AM5 socket, without requiring a new platform or different memory. Support for DDR5 at 5600 MHz is maintained. The processor also integrates a Radeon GPU for diagnostic purposes, as is the case on other chips in the Ryzen 9000 series.

The second generation 3D V-Cache technology used here is presented by AMD as allowing better thermal behavior and more margin for overclocking, in addition to the usual tools such as the Curve Optimizer and the Precision Boost Overdrive.

Positioning and pricing

The 9950X3D2 is available from $899 at several US retailers, making it the most expensive Ryzen processor in the current catalog. For comparison, the 9950X3D sells for around $699, and the 9950X around $520.

AMD is positioning this processor for professional uses: content creation, workloads with high sensitivity to latency, local artificial intelligence. Recent work has indeed shown that RAG-type models, an AI technique that combines text generation and information retrieval, can benefit measurably from a larger processor cache.

The launch of this 9950X3D2 comes at a time when Intel is preparing Nova Lake-S processors also equipped with an extended L3 cache, according to information circulating for several months. AMD thus seems to want to take a position in this segment before the competition materializes.
