The new Runners update completely shuffles how you secure high-tier loot, tossing a mix of standard bunkers and massive elemental vaults across the island. If you want to walk away with top-tier gear, you have to get cozy with a brutal layer of random drop luck. This season replaces static key spawns with pure chest RNG, turning your inventory into a ticking clock if you get targeted while carrying a legendary keycard.
Hunting Down Vault Keys and Keycards
You can’t just land on a guaranteed table and grab a shiny passcard like you did in past updates. Both the standard keys and the legendary keycards are tossed into the general loot pool as random chest drops.
You’ll occasionally spot a key sitting on the ground as rare floor loot, but your best bet is opening every single container you pass. Rare Vault Keys are fairly common, but the Epic variant is a nightmare to hunt down. To maximize your chances of pulling an Epic Vault Keycard, you need to focus entirely on routing your drops around areas packed with Rare Chests.
The moment you pick up a standard key, the game gives you a brief visual ping on your map showing you where the closest small vault is hiding. The problem is that the nearest door might be sitting on the completely opposite side of the map. Before you waste ten minutes sprinting blindly across hostile fields with a target on your back, you should make sure your loadout can handle the journey. If you want to hire a dedicated gun to protect you while you track down these drops, head over to my Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 3 NPC locations guide.
Every Vault Location and Key Requirement
The island holds two main tiers of secure rooms, alongside a weird puzzle bunker hidden away on the coast. Small vaults reward you with a quick injection of shields and mid-tier weapons, while the massive underground Sprite Vaults require a much rarer card to crack.
Standard vaults contain a single rare chest, some helpful Slurp barrels to top off your shields, and a dedicated Sprite Chest. If you manage to get your hands on an Epic Keycard, the massive Sprite Vaults give you multiple Sprite Chests with a high probability of dropping legendary companions, alongside rare chests and standard supply crates.
I put together the exact layout of where you need to take your keys so you can plan your rotations ahead of time.
