With the arrival of the new installments, the universe of 28 is experiencing a real resurgence in popularity. Historical fans are diving back into this Britain devastated by the Rage virus, while a new generation is discovering this modern classic of the zombie genre. Here is where to (re)discover the franchise.
More than twenty years after the release of the first film, whether in reality or in the franchise timeline, the infected continue to make headlines. It is surely one of the most influential zombie stories of modern times, inspiring other classics like The Walking Dead, I Am Legend, or even The Last of Us. And this is likely to continue for some time as a new trilogy is on the horizon. For those who want to watch or rewatch all the films to prepare for the next installment’s release, here is where to find them on different platforms.
28 Days Later
Released in 2002 and directed by Danny Boyle, 28 Days Later is the film that revitalized the zombie genre in cinema. The story follows Jim (Cillian Murphy), a young man who wakes up from a coma in a deserted London after a virus outbreak transforms humans into extremely violent creatures. Thanks to its nervous and deliberately raw direction, as well as its iconic soundtrack, the film remains an absolute reference in horror cinema today. Cillian Murphy also delivers one of his first great performances on screen.
To watch or rewatch this classic, head to Prime Video or the SFR Box VOD platform.
28 Weeks Later
Five years after the first film, 28 Weeks Later presents an England under military control after the catastrophe. Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, this second installment focuses more on large-scale action and chaos, elements later seen in films like World War Z. It follows a family trying to survive as a new contamination threatens to plunge the country back into horror.
28 Weeks Later is currently available on Prime Video and Disney+.
28 Years Later
Highly anticipated by fans, 28 Years Later marks the return of Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland. As the title suggests, this new chapter takes place several decades after the events of the previous films and shows a world profoundly transformed by the virus, far from what we are used to seeing in the genre. More visually and narratively ambitious, this third installment is the first of a trilogy.
Released in cinemas in June 2025, 28 Years Later is currently only available on VOD at SFR.
28 Years Later: The Temple of the Dead
A direct sequel to the previous installment, 28 Years Later: The Temple of the Dead continues the exploration of this universe, which becomes even darker and more brutal. The film delves into the consequences of the virus on the survivors and introduces new threats in a world where the rules of humanity have completely changed. It incorporates elements of more generic post-apocalyptic stories like Mad Max or Twisted Metal.
Released on January 26 in theaters, 28 Years Later: The Temple of the Dead has been available for digital purchase on the SFR VOD platform since May 14. It will also be available for rent starting from May 20.
