The audiovisual cinema option at Marie-Curie high school in Vire Normandie is currently facing the threat of being eliminated. Following Jeanne Marchalot’s testimony, Hanna Ladoul has agreed to share her own story.

From Normandy to movie sets Hanna Ladoul is currently scouting in La Réunion for her upcoming feature film, “De nature humaine.” A project that marks a journey initiated far from movie sets, between the Paris region and Bocage virois. The director recalls growing up between these two worlds, before settling in Campeaux at the age of 13. “My mother fell in love with Normandy,” she shares, before opening a podiatry practice there, firmly establishing the family in this rural region.

A passionate journey in rural surroundings It was at Collège du Bény-Bocage that her passion for cinema was born. Her history and geography teacher, Jean-Pierre Dupré, offered an introduction to the discipline, enriched by the input of Youri Deschamps, a former cinema option student, now the managing editor of the magazine “Éclipses” and a lecturer at the University of Caen. Leaving the Paris region to settle in Campeaux may appear as a cultural shock. However, it is in this context that an unexpected path opened up: the world of cinema. The initiation continued in Vire, where an audiovisual cinema option offers “rigorous instruction, a rare option in a rural environment, now facing elimination.”

A demanding education This journey quickly proved decisive. Admission to the Cannes School of Journalism, which only accepts about twenty students from hundreds of applicants, was an initial recognition.

“This experience was a considerable asset during my admission process, especially the oral part.” – Hanna Ladoul

She also emphasizes the quality of the training in Vire. According to her, the acquired knowledge allowed her to directly enter the third year of a cinema degree at the Sorbonne Arts School after completing two years at the IUT.

Bridges to the professional world The Angers Premiers Plans Festival, in which option students participate, serves as an initial entry into the professional world. Hanna Ladoul describes it as “a very qualitative festival.” It is in this context that she meets director Cyprien Vial, along with Arielle Leva, an agent who also went through the cinema option. This encounter was crucial. Cyprien Vial became a reference figure for her to seek advice or internships.

“As soon as we needed advice or were looking for an internship, he was very helpful.” – Hanna Ladoul

Return to Vire and transmission Even today, the director maintains a connection with her training ground. With each new film, she presents it at the Cinema Le Basselin in Vire. She meets the current cinema option students, continuing a chain of transmission to which she now belongs, and which she sees as fragile today. She recalls her student days, a few years back, when she attended director Cédric Anger’s presentation of “Le Tueur” in 2007, an alumnus of the Marie-Curie high school cinema option.

Behind the image, “Dozens of professions” In a different context, Hanna Ladoul aims to deconstruct certain preconceptions.

“In reality, cinema involves dozens of professions.” – Hanna Ladoul

Writing, filming, production, post-production: many professions often invisible to the general public. She also emphasizes the weight of the sector, widely underestimated and often misunderstood in terms of opportunities.

“Cinema and audiovisual form a major economic sector, whose importance is comparable to that of the automotive industry.” – Hanna Ladoul

A stake for the territory For Hanna Ladoul, the existence of such an option is essential. She highlights its vitality, which makes the high school and the town a true cultural anchor in a rural setting, currently under threat.
