A 35-year-old Scotsman passed away while participating in an ultra-trail in the Highlands of his country. An exceptional and experienced athlete, David Parrish was paying tribute to a deceased friend under similar circumstances.

The sports world was relieved to learn of the successful surgery of Eddy Merckx. However, less joyous news emerged this Wednesday as The Scotsman announced the passing of David Parrish. This exceptional 35-year-old athlete disappeared while attempting to break a world record during the extremely challenging 234-mile Cape Wrath Trail in Scotland. “David was a mountain and hill runner who tragically disappeared doing something he loved,” a rescue service member told The Scotsman. Despite being the winner of this event in 2023, David Parrish was found on Sunday around 10:25 p.m. in the Kintail region of the Highlands.

Parrish was running in honor of a trail runner friend who passed away in 2014.

Ironically, the Scottish ultra-trailer was also paying tribute to his friend Luke Ireland, who died of hypothermia in November 2014 while running in the mountains of Glen Cova in Scotland. “David’s dedication to honoring his friend’s memory while raising funds to support our service really touched us. His fundraising will aid our volunteer team that continues to operate across all of Scotland’s mountains,” announced a spokesperson for the Scottish Mountain Rescue (SMR), the rescue service benefiting from the fund created by David Parrish. The same organization that had rescued David Parrish’s friend Luke Ireland in 2014. Approximately 35,000 euros have reportedly been raised, as reported by 20Minutes. According to the Scottish police, there are no suspicious circumstances related to this disappearance. Additionally, the deceased’s family wishes for their privacy to be respected.
