It is THE scene of the 29th matchday of the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga! During the home victory of the EWE Baskets Oldenburg against the Rostock Seawolves (81:79), German national player Nicholas Tischler (25/two international matches) stands out particularly – due to a mega fail! It’s crazy that he later becomes the match winner.
Incredible scene in the middle of the second quarter: With the score at 26:23 for the hosts, the Oldenburg team intercepts an attack: Christopher Clemons plays an artistic floor pass to Nicholas Tischler. He storms alone towards the Rostock basket. The noise in the arena rises enormously. Fans expect two easy points – Tischler seems to as well. He jumps high, trying to show off a spectacular dunk by spinning in the air. Dyn commentator Arne Malsch enthusiastically shouts into the mic: “Now it’s going to ring!”
Screw dunk goes wrong: Mega fail in the Basketball Bundesliga
But then THIS happens: Tischler hammers the ball right onto the rim! Gasps from the fans. He can’t believe it himself. He was probably too confident. Malsch: “No, no! The ‘verdunk’. And then the questioning look from Lazar Spasic (coach of Oldenburg team). Like: What were you trying to do there? The screw dunk – if it works, it’s an absolute plug pulled in here for the audience. If it goes wrong, it can push Rostock a bit further.”
The scene continues even further: The ball remains in possession of Oldenburg. Tischler gets the ball again – this time beyond the three-point line. He shoots again – and again only hits the rim. Madness! Tischler looks shocked, raising his hand apologetically towards his teammates and fans.
The first half of the game is evenly matched. Rostock wins the first quarter 15:14. It’s tied at 38:38 at halftime. The game remains exciting: With 63:62 for the guests, they head into the final quarter. Nico Tischler shines in the mega intense final phase, ignites the arena with his three-pointer to make it 80:78 – and the decision! After that, only one point is scored on each side.
Oldenburg, who recently sensationally defeated Alba Berlin, can still hope for the play-ins and even the playoffs.
Tischler after the game at Dyn: “It was a very physical match, no team could pull away. I left some opportunities on the court during the game. In practice, my dunk is one hundred percent. It’s different in the game. I wanted to offer our spectators something. Next time it will go in.”
