After recruiting many players in defense, OM will embark on a new major project for its defense. Who will be the survivors of this wave of departures?
During the last summer transfer window, OM had a goal: to strengthen their defense. In this regard, the Phocéens club made a large turnover, parting ways with players such as Quentin Merlin, Chancel Mbemba, Luiz Felipe, and Derek Cornelius. Many new recruits followed as OM welcomed Nayef Aguerd, Benjamin Pavard, Facundo Medina, CJ Egan-Riley, Emerson, and Timothy Weah.
A defense in great difficulty
OM had high hopes with this defensive renewal. After a catastrophic season in defense, the Phocéens club hoped to have fixed this area of the game. However, this is not the case. This season, OM still shows major defensive issues despite all these signings. Many departures are expected to occur in the south of France. The new Marseille management will have to rebuild a new squad.
OM wants to rebuild around a few players
Indeed, several defenders are rumored to be leaving. This is notably the case for Leonardo Balerdi, who is coming to the end of his time at OM. Praised by Inter Milan, Benjamin Pavard is unlikely to be kept by the Phocéens club. Arriving for free last summer, CJ Egan-Riley does not fit into OM’s plans and could also leave the club. The Olympians are expected to rebuild their defense around Facundo Medina, Nayef Aguerd, Emerson, and Timothy Weah.
