This meeting provides participants with a privileged framework to put their skills in international humanitarian law (IHL) into practice in an international context. For this edition, the competition brought together students from various military academies, representing 17 countries.
The participants were divided into mixed teams of three cadets from different nationalities. Over the course of a week, each team represented a fictional country, with its own strategic objectives, and had to defend its positions through practical cases supervised by officials from Joint Operation Centers.
This experience allowed the three cadet commissioners to fully grasp the importance of IHL in military operations, while deepening their understanding of the role of operational legal advisor (LEGAL ADVISOR – LEGAD) that they will be called upon to perform. Their participation highlights the importance of mastering the law of armed conflicts in order to provide relevant advice to command in increasingly demanding operational environments, especially in inter-allied contexts.
Congratulations to commissioners Océane and Victor, each of whom received a team award acknowledging their legal and linguistic skills in this multicultural environment.
Following this event, the Military Commissioners School will soon host in Salon-de-Provence the 195th International French-speaking Military Course on International Humanitarian Law, in partnership with the IIDH. This two-week training will allow first-year students, joined by forty commissioners and officers from partner countries, to obtain the level 1 qualification of LEGAD.
