The “tulip season is open”, joked the 118th Ukrainian mechanized brigade in a Facebook post. They specified with accompanying images: “The pilots of the unmanned systems battalion SIRIUS of the 118th Ukrainian mechanized brigade destroyed a valuable target – a 240mm self-propelled mortar 2S4 “Tulip”.
The army is pleased with their capture as the Russian mortar 2S4 Tulip is “one of the most powerful artillery systems” still in service, as highlighted by the Ukrainian specialized media United 24.
A system designed to eliminate fortified targets
Known for its ability to destroy fortified positions like bunkers, it can fire shells weighing 130 kg for explosives and over 220 kg for rocket-assisted projectiles. The Russian mortar can also launch precision-guided munitions.
This strike carried out by the unmanned systems battalion Sirius underlines the vulnerability of heavy equipment against drone technologies. Despite its firepower, the Tulip mortar is hindered by its large size, slow rate of fire – about one shot per minute – and long deployment time. All these factors make it particularly vulnerable to drone attacks.
The loss of this highly valuable mortar for the Russian army is another blow. Earlier in the day, the “Achilles” brigade struck a Russian Nebo-M radar system about 100 km from the Ukrainian border.
