The position of Donald Trump on sending potential troops on the ground was still uncertain at the end of March. An increasingly unclear strategy since the White House tenant decided, on Sunday, May 3, to send no less than 15,000 marines to the Strait of Hormuz. The goal of these forces is to escort ships from countries “that have nothing to do with the conflict in the Middle East” in the Strait of Hormuz, Donald Trump announced on his platform Truth Social. A “Freedom Project” announced by Trump who also indicated the sending of over a hundred drones and missile-launching destroyers.
On the other hand, Iranian armed forces have warned the US military as reported by Le Parisien. “We warn any foreign armed forces, especially the aggressive American military: if they intend to approach the Strait of Hormuz or enter it, they will be targeted and attacked,” said General Ali Abdollahi, head of the Khatam Al-Anbiya armed forces command. In a message published on X, Iranian official Ebrahim Azizi reiterates and asserts that “any American interference” in the strait would be considered a “violation of the ceasefire.”
Iran calls on the United States to take a “reasonable approach.”
Diplomatically, the Iranian government also nuances and claims to want to continue negotiations in the face of Donald Trump’s military approach, as reported by BFMTV. “At this stage, our priority is to end the war. We cannot ignore the lessons of the past. We have negotiated twice on nuclear aspects and, at the same time, we have been attacked by the United States,” said Esmaël Baghaï, spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He further indicates: “The other party must resolve to adopt a reasonable approach and abandon excessive demands regarding Iran.”
In France, President Emmanuel Macron called for a “concerted reopening of the Strait of Hormuz” between the two belligerents. During the opening plenary session of the European Political Community Summit in Yerevan, the President affirmed that Europeans could “facilitate the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.” A way to position the European Union as a diplomatic and economic intermediary voice as the United States announced the withdrawal of 5,000 US soldiers stationed in Germany.
