As the Senate prepares to examine the updated defense budget, which includes a €36 billion increase, the Senator from Lot spoke at the podium on May 5, 2026 to demand that the government “tell the truth to the French people.”
During his speech, Jean-Marc Vayssouze-Faure described a “world on the brink,” citing “for the first time since 1945, the threat of high-intensity conflict that can no longer be ignored on our continent.” “Yes, the world is changing, and France must adapt,” declared the parliamentarian, emphasizing the need for a budget effort to enhance defense capabilities quickly with more ammunition, drones, and personnel.
Within the hemicycle, Jean-Marc Vayssouze-Faure aimed to address the “acceptability” of this additional effort, questioning the lack of consideration for “consent to peace preservation” in the budget update. He stressed the importance of being truthful with the French people, highlighting the potential repercussions of increased defense spending on public services.
Jean-Marc Vayssouze-Faure also reiterated the proposals made by his parliamentary group to mobilize new resources without burdening the less affluent. He mentioned taxing wealthier taxpayers and introducing a defense savings account to strengthen the Army-Nation bond.
The elected official also urged the Government to acknowledge that allocating billions to defense while protecting the wealthy through tax inertia is contradictory. He emphasized the need to involve those with the means in reinforcing the country.
The Senator underscored that defending France goes beyond budget increases for the military; it involves safeguarding all pillars of the nation, including education, health, social cohesion, local authorities, and collective security.
