Iran has transmitted its response to the American proposal to end the war in the Middle East through Pakistan, a state media reported on Sunday. “The Islamic Republic of Iran today (Sunday) sent its response to the latest text proposed by the United States, via the Pakistani mediator,” the official Irna news agency stated.

The response focuses on “the end of the war and maritime security.” “The main focus of Iran’s response to the American proposal is on ending the war and maritime security in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz,” Isna wrote on its Telegram account shortly after.

On Saturday, Iran had cast doubt on the seriousness of American diplomacy to end the conflict. A month after the ceasefire came into effect, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressed this skepticism in a telephone conversation with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, following new clashes in the waters of the Gulf.

“Recent escalation of tensions by American forces and their multiple violations of the ceasefire strengthen suspicions about the motivation and seriousness of the American party in the path of diplomacy,” said Abbas Araghchi, as reported by the Iranian agency Isna.

The Ministry’s spokesperson, Ismail Baghaei, stated on Friday that Tehran was still considering the American proposal to permanently end hostilities. Donald Trump was expecting to receive a response “very soon,” as reported by the television channel LCI on Saturday, after a brief conversation with the American president. He had already mentioned the previous day that he expected to receive “a letter” in the evening.

Since the start of the war on February 28, triggered by an Israeli-American attack on Iran, Tehran has been blockading the Strait of Hormuz, to which Washington responded by imposing a blockade of Iranian ports on April 13.

On Friday, the US military announced it had “neutralized” two Iranian tankers in the Gulf of Oman by air, at the entrance to the strait, a strategic passage for global hydrocarbon trade. Although the vessels were not carrying any cargo according to the army, images released by the US military command for the region (Centcom) showed thick columns of smoke billowing from the bridges. Tehran had denounced to the UN a “flagrant violation” of the ceasefire.
