Leon Panetta, former CIA director, criticizes US intervention in Iran
- Leon Panetta, former director of the CIA, was a guest on LCI on Friday, May 15.
- He criticizes the American intervention in Iran, stating that the goal of regime change was not supported by intelligence information.
- Regarding the conflict escalation, he believes that sending the military is now the only solution to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
“History has always taught us that we cannot bomb to achieve a regime change,”
said Panetta during his appearance on LCI on May 15. He condemned the US military intervention in Iran, emphasizing that it lacked clear objectives.
“Iran has always been an adversary and a concern for us due to its efforts to develop nuclear weapons and its support for instability in the region. Iran has been a long-standing enemy,”
he explained.
“But I think the effort to lead this attack, in collaboration with Israel, hoping that if the leaders were eliminated, the regime would collapse in a few days, was not a good goal. Because our intelligence sources clearly indicated that it would never happen. So, I think the United States never really had clear objectives as to the purpose of this war,”
he asserted.

In his analysis, Panetta expressed skepticism about the future of the region, particularly in relation to potential agreements with Iran. He doubted the Iranian regime’s intentions to uphold any agreement and predicted possible future conflicts involving the United States and Israel.
