The kind of ranks they are not (yet) common. Susan Coyle is set to become the first woman to head the Australian army since its establishment 125 years ago. This announcement was made by Australia’s Minister of Defense, Richard Marles, on Monday, April 13, 2026, hailing it as a profoundly historic appointment.

“This is a profoundly historic moment,” emphasized the Defense Minister, as reported by AFP. A seasoned military officer, expert in cyber warfare, but also a mother: this is who Susan Coyle is.

30 years of career

Born on May 21, 1970, in Kyogle, a small town in the Northern Coast region of New South Wales, Australia, Susan Coyle is now 56 years old. The Lieutenant General has been appointed Chief of the Australian Armed Forces after 30 years of military career, during which she served in the Solomon Islands, Afghanistan, and the Middle East.

Susan Coyle highlighted her expertise in areas such as cyber warfare, at a time when the Australian military is modernizing by acquiring more advanced tools, including drones and long-range strike capabilities. Plus submarines.

This extensive experience provides a solid foundation for assuming command responsibilities and the trust entrusted to me.

Susan Coyle is a mother of three children, and her husband also serves in the military. She joined the army in 1987 and held several senior command positions, according to the British news agency Reuters.

She studied science at the Australian Defense Force Academy and joined the Australian Royal Corps of Signals in 1992, after graduating from the Royal Military College, as reported by The Guardian and the Australian Associated Press. She also graduated with honors from the US Army War College.

Susan Coyle was appointed head of the Joint Capabilities Group in the autumn of 2024. She leads the space and cyber domains, as well as national defense support, according to her official biography.

“We are much more numerous”

Susan Coyle had already discussed a change within the Australian military. In 2024, she told the Australian media ABC that when she enlisted, only 10% of the personnel were women and the highest-ranking female soldier was a colonel. Today, there are four three-star female generals.

“And we are many more,” she added. “A lot of amazing women are coming in, who have worked very hard, done all the right kinds of jobs, and I think have been recognized. It’s a wonderful place to [work].”

As Susan told me, you cannot become what you do not see.
