The Cercle de conférences et d’histoire locale d’Agon-Coutainville (CCHL-AC) is organizing its next event this Saturday, April 18, 2026 at 18:00 at the Espace Culturel Daniel-Rouland. Michel Boivin, a well-known friend and neighbor of the association from Blainville-sur-Mer (Manche), will address the public as a cultural history enthusiast.
Historian, sociologist, and political scientist, retired professor from universities, will tackle a still sensitive subject, 80 years later: World War II in our region. His conference is titled “Criticism of preconceived ideas about the funny war, the occupation and liberation of Manche between 1939-1945.”
Funny war, occupation, and liberation of Manche
This expert will analyze and shed light on the behavior of the residents of Manche faced, for example, with the disorienting effects of the “funny war” in 1939-1940, and then the strong occupation of German troops for four years, which they struggle to endure.
According to René Gautier, communication manager at CCHL-AC, “he will also denounce the misconceptions about the liberation, during which a third of the residents of Manche were forced to flee, far from the images portrayed by national and international media. Also those about the collaboration and purification, contested by many people from Manche, who believe that it targets more scapegoats than authentic responsible individuals.”
“This conference will allow everyone, 80 years later, to move away from preconceived opinions and media-driven and fragmented views, to delve into the reality of the period, and discover its controversies and even misunderstandings.”

In other words, a true lesson in local and global history! This event will be an opportunity to explore all the books published by Michel Boivin on this period and to share a convivial moment after the conference.
