Whether on the small or big screen, the world of video games is attracting attention once again, with producers capitalizing on the success of titles such as Uncharted, The Last of Us, or Fallout for multiple adaptations. Legendary Entertainment, having had a satisfying first experience with Pokemon Detective Pikachu, found the formula to attract mass audiences in theaters with Minecraft, The Film – the number one movie of the year in the United States. This success led the firm to resurrect a well-known franchise: Street Fighter.
Capcom’s flagship series, flourishing in the gaming world in the 90s on arcade machines and home consoles, placed one-on-one combat games on a pedestal, like Mortal Kombat. Just like its rival, Street Fighter was previously adapted into cinema twice, with the disastrous The Legend of Chun-Li resulting in a technical knockout at the box office with only $12.7M. Legendary’s acquisition of the franchise rights is seen as a fresh start for the series in the world of cinema. The reboot by director Kitao Sakurai aims to capture the essence of the original game with a strong cast including Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji, Callina Liang, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, and Jason Momoa portraying well-known characters like Ken Masters, Ryu, Chun-Li, Balrog, Blanka.
The storyline of the film will take us back to 1993, following street fighters Ryu and Ken Masters recruited by the mysterious Chun-Li to participate in the World Warrior Tournament – a competition of fists and fury. However, behind the royal battle lies a deadly conspiracy that forces participants to fight against each other and their demons from the past, with a clear ultimatum: it’s game over if they fail to confront them.
Originally set to be produced by Sony Pictures, Street Fighter almost didn’t make it due to the contract’s end between Sony and Legendary Entertainment in late 2024. Paramount Pictures stepped in, securing a distribution deal for the next three years, ensuring the revival’s confirmation for a release date of October 14 in theaters.
