Future of the Halle Tropisme: why the cultural venue very popular with Montpellier residents will not move

Mayor Michaël Delafosse announced the launch of an architectural competition to sustainably integrate this cultural third place, the Cité Créative district. Opened in 2019 on a military wasteland, Tropisme will be kept in a redesigned version.

With the lease coming to an end in 2030, the future of the Halle Tropisme was at stake. This cultural third place was able to set up temporarily in 2019 on the wasteland left by the soldiers of the EAI, the infantry application school. The State agreed to cede the 35 hectares to the City on condition of building housing.

Become a must

But over the years, Tropisme has established itself as a cultural hotspot in Montpellier. So, to prevent the Hall from disappearing at the end of the lease, Mayor Michaël Delafosse decided to “sanctuariser“. For this, he announced on Wednesday April 22 during the presentation of Hyperactive, the Cité Créative festival that he planned “preserve Tropisme and its identity, while transforming it. We are going to launch a competition of architects to integrate it on this site and find a place for it in this place. Tropisme will inevitably change but it will remain and endure.”

And Michaël Delafosse ensures that this experience, initially ephemeral, will be sustainable. Certainly in a slightly different form, perhaps a little more reduced. Now it’s time for projects to come up with the best idea for a Halle Tropisme 2.0.
