The Canadian team of the mixed 4x100m relay won its qualifying heat on Saturday in Botswana at the World Relays Championships, setting a new world record in the process, which was short-lived. The quartet made up of Eliezer Adjibi, Marie-Êloïse Leclair, Duan Asemota, and Audrey Leduc crossed the finish line in 40.08 seconds. However, the new record was quickly surpassed by Jamaica, who completed the distance in 39.99 seconds.
Canada is the reigning champion in this new event, having won gold in 2025 with a time of 40.30 seconds, ahead of Jamaica (40.44s) and Great Britain (40.88s).
Leduc and Leclair also combined their efforts with Sade McCreath and Donna Ntambue in the 4x100m relay, qualifying for the final by finishing 2nd in their heat in 42.39 seconds.
The Canadian relay runners also secured the top spot in their group in the 4x400m. Dianna Proctor clocked a time of 3 minutes 23.52 seconds, supported by Grace Konrad, Jasneet Nijjar, and Lauren Gale.
On the men’s side, Canadians Aaron Brown, Brendon Rodney, Jerome Blake, and Andre De Grasse finished 1st in their heat in 37.56 seconds, the fastest time recorded this season. They also earned a spot in the final.
The top 12 teams from each of the 6 events presented in Botswana – the 4x100m and 4x400m men’s, women’s, and mixed events – secure their place for the 2027 World Championships in Peking.
The finals will take place on Sunday. ICI TOU.TV will broadcast the competitions live (new window) (without commentary).
