THAILAND – CULTURE: The National Theater reopens after three years of renovation and is sold out

The prestigious National Theater of Thailand officially reopened its doors this weekend after more than three years of major renovation work, marking a new step in the modernization of the kingdom’s cultural infrastructure.

On May 9, 2026 at 1:30 p.m., Thai Minister of Culture, Sabida Thaïsret, attended a performance of khon – the traditional Thai masked theater – entitled Ramakien, episode Kesorn Thamala Plichiwanorganized within the freshly renovated National Theatre.

The event, orchestrated by the Department of Fine Arts of the Ministry of Culture via the Bureau of Performing Arts, was part of the special program “Reopening of the Curtain of the National Theater: Return to Traditional Thai Arts”. This series of performances, organized on May 9 and 10, allowed the public to discover and test the theater’s new sound systems, lighting and stage technologies.

The renovation, carried out for more than three years, aimed to bring the National Theater up to international standards. The establishment now has the latest generation of digital equipment, including the first AFC audio system (Active Field Control) installed in Thaïlande.

This advanced acoustic technology makes it possible to digitally adapt the acoustics of the room according to the shows presented. Thanks to a network of microphones, speakers and real-time digital processing, the system can recreate different soundscapes – from traditional theater to symphony concerts – without physical modification of the room, thus improving the clarity of the sound and audience immersion.

The reopening program included concerts of Western orchestral music, Ramakien-inspired khon performances, Thai classical music concerts as well as a traditional theater performance lakhon phanthang titled The Conqueror of the Ten Directions.

The authorities have also modernized the interior spaces in order to be able to host all types of artistic and cultural shows in optimal conditions.

The public’s interest was immediate: all the tickets put on sale for the weekend’s test performances were reserved within a few days, testifying to the Thai public’s attachment to its cultural institutions.
