Nvidia reaffirms its desire to improve modding tools for classic PC games with Advanced Particle VFX and a Quake III Arena RTX demo enhanced with Path Tracing. The new RTX Remix Advanced Particle VFX update offers more complex particles, dynamic animations, gravity, collisions, and showcases the Quake III Arena RTX demo as a technological showcase.

This update expands the capabilities of RTX Remix beyond just visual enhancements for old PC games. It adds sophistication to the modding toolset, focusing on giving users more control over particle effects. The playable Quake III Arena RTX demo by WoodBoy reimagines the iconic Area 15 NVIDIA Bunker map with modern technologies activated.

The release of this update was anticipated after it was previewed at GDC 2026. This official deployment marks the transition from a trade show promise to a tool now available for mod creators.

Advanced Particle VFX and Quake III Arena RTX

The Advanced Particle VFX technology builds on the “Path Traced” particle system previously integrated into RTX Remix. While the system initially allowed for replacing outdated effects with physically simulated particles capable of casting shadows and appearing in reflections, it now operates at a higher speed.

Modders can now achieve more with effects authoring, using dynamic animations to change particle color, size, transparency, and speed over their lifespan with controls based on curves. NVia also introduces more complex gravitational effects, directional adjustments, trails, and random elements to avoid visual repetition in looped effects.

The highlighted Quake III Arena RTX demo showcases WoodBoy’s mod, which remasters the classic Area 15 NVIDIA Bunker map while incorporating technologies like Path Tracing, RTX Remix Logic, DLSS Ray Reconstruction, DLSS Multi Frame Generation, and Reflex.

This title serves as a showcase for the new VFX tools. Nvidia announces that a major update for the demo will arrive on April 28th, featuring 27 remastered maps, 4,000 materials, new weapons, and 30 player models.
