AMD extends FSR 4.1 beyond RDNA 4 after community feedback

Following a major leak from AMD’s GitHub repository last month, which revealed that the PS5 Pro’s PSSR 2.0 uses the AMD FSR 4.1 INT8 build for the RDNA 3-based console, the internet criticized AMD for ignoring the RDNA 3 and RDNA 2 GPUs on PC. The majority of AMD GPU owners purchased these cards with long-term support in mind. When the leak surfaced, the community felt betrayed. With AMD’s RX 7000 series GPUs remaining competitive in many use cases and games, often at more attractive prices than offerings from AMD and the competition, this is a particularly bitter pill to swallow for many people who thought such support was coming.

A month later, AMD finally addressed these concerns and announced that the same INT8 FSR 4.1 model would be available for RX 7000 series GPUs based on RDNA 3 in July 2026 and for RX 6000 series graphics cards based on RDNA 2 in early 2027. FSR 4.1 is expected to support more than 300 games at launch on RDNA 3 GPUs. This update was unexpected and surprised gamers, who saw it as a response from AMD to community outrage.

Jack Huynh, Senior Vice President and General Manager of AMD’s Computing and Graphics Division, directly announced the FSR 4.1 update on X for RX 7000 and RX 6000 series GPUs, accompanied by an announcement video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fN8bFc1_LEo:

“My team and I have been working hard to evolve AMD FSR 4 and bring it to more cards. This July, RDNA 3 players will experience FSR 4.1 upscaling, delivering sharper visuals and smoother gameplay than ever before. We’ve tested hundreds of PC configurations and hundreds of games to make sure the images are crisp and everything works right out of the box

For gamers who stuck with the RX 6000 series GPUs, he added: “And for our RDNA 2 players, we have something exciting coming in early 2027. FSR 4.1 upscaling will also be available on your cards.”

When FSR 4.1 was released earlier this year, it was limited to RDNA 4 RX 9000 series GPUs, forcing many AMD Radeon users to resort to workarounds. Those stuck with older versions of FSR used OptiScaler to unofficially inject FSR 4.1 into games, but the workaround wasn’t always satisfactory.

With AMD finally introducing FSR 4.1 for RDNA 3 and RDNA 2 GPUs, gamers will no longer have to resort to workarounds like OptiScaler to gain performance. The official FSR 4.1 implementation for older RDNA maps will likely be refined to work better and smoother in supported games than competing third-party mods. While owners of RX 7000 series cards will receive FSR 4.1 in the coming months, users of RDNA 2 cards will have to wait a little longer, until 2027.
