The latest update added something that separates casual players from the truly dedicated grinders in Fortnite: three exclusive Rivalry Mastery Umbrellas tied to your total Rivalry win count. These are not handed out for a single Victory Royale. They require sustained, focused effort inside the Showdown Rivalries event, and they disappear permanently when Chapter 7 Season 2 ends.
What are the Fortnite Rivalry Mastery Umbrellas?
These three cosmetic umbrellas were introduced in the v40.40 update as part of the Showdown Rivalries event in Chapter 7 Season 2. Unlike the standard Victory Umbrella you earn from a single win, the Mastery Umbrellas track your cumulative Rivalry wins across the entire season. There are exactly three tiers:
The milestones scale steeply. Getting to 150 is a grind. Getting to 1,000 before the season closes is a serious commitment.

How do Rivalry wins actually work?
This is where most players go wrong. Standard match wins, including regular Victory Royales, do not count toward your Mastery Umbrella progress at all. Rivalry wins are tracked in a completely separate system.
To earn a Rivalry win, you need to do two things. First, interact with a Rivalry Station on the map (look for the crossed-swords icon). Second, complete the Rivalry Contract by defeating your designated Rival yourself.
Fortnite Guide: How to Get Rivalry Mastery Umbrellas
The key detail here is that the final blow must come from you. If a third party eliminates your Rival, or the Storm finishes them off, the contract registers as “Contested” rather than a clean win. A Contested result only awards half the Rival Credits, and it does not count as a Rivalry win for Mastery Umbrella progress.
There is a partial recovery option though. If your Rival gets eliminated by someone else, they drop a Rivalry Tag. Picking up that tag still gives you credit in the Rivalry system, so always chase it down even when the kill goes to another player.
info
Prioritize hunting your Rival directly after accepting a contract. The longer you wait, the higher the chance another player or the Storm ends the match before you can land the final blow.
How to grind Rivalry wins efficiently
Reaching 1,000 wins in a single season is not a casual goal. Here is what the system requires you to focus on:
- Activate contracts every match. Visit Rivalry Stations as early as possible in each game. Every match without an active contract is a missed win opportunity.
- Secure the kill yourself. Play aggressively toward your Rival once the contract is active. Do not let other players zone in and steal the elimination.
- Chase Rivalry Tags. Even when you lose the kill, grabbing the dropped Rivalry Tag keeps your credits flowing and maintains momentum.
- Stack wins across modes. Rivalry wins count across compatible modes, so play whichever format you perform best in.

What counts as a Rivalry win vs. a Contested result?
The distinction matters a lot when you are chasing 1,000 wins, so here is the breakdown:
- Rivalry Win: You land the final blow on your Rival. Full Rival Credits awarded. Counts toward Mastery Umbrella progress.
- Contested: Your Rival is eliminated by a third party or the Storm. Half Rival Credits awarded. Does not count toward Mastery Umbrella progress.
- Rivalry Tag pickup: After a Contested result, picking up the tag your Rival drops still contributes to your Rival Credits, though it does not flip a Contested result into a full win.
danger
Do not confuse Rivalry wins with standard Victory Royales. The two systems are completely separate. Winning a match without an active Rivalry Contract gives you zero progress toward these umbrellas.
