Fable
Fable’s return will have to wait a little longer. Xbox has officially confirmed the postponement of the highly anticipated reboot developed by Playground Games. Initially scheduled for fall 2026, the game will now be released in February 2027. A decision which illustrates the strategic adjustments made by Microsoft in the face of a particularly busy video game calendar.
The announcement was made by Xbox through its official channels, accompanied by a clear message: to give Fable “the moment he deserves”. Behind this formula lies a well-known industry reality. The year 2026 promises to be extremely busy for major productions, with several blockbusters already positioned for the end of the year. Xbox therefore prefers to avoid one of its most important projects being drowned out in a saturated period.
A central project for Xbox
Since its announcement in 2020, Fable has represented one of the pillars of the new Xbox generation. This reboot must relaunch a historic license born at the time of Lionhead Studios, while modernizing its universe for a current audience. Playground Games, known for the Forza Horizon series, is responsible for this ambitious revival.
The studio had already seen the calendar evolve for the first time. Long expected for 2025, the game was then repositioned to fall 2026 before this new postponement to February 2027. Despite this additional delay, Xbox insists on the fact that development is progressing in good conditions. Matt Booty, head of gaming content at Xbox, said the team feels “very good” about the current state of the project.
An assumed calendar strategy
The repositioning of Fable also seems linked to the fierce competition expected at the end of 2026. Several major productions are already planned for this period, notably the next Grand Theft Auto VI as well as other big releases associated with Xbox and Activision.
Microsoft is now seeking to better distribute its launches in order to prevent its own games from competing indirectly. This logic is not new for the manufacturer, which had already adjusted certain calendars in recent years in order to give more visibility to its exclusives.
The choice of February 2027 therefore appears to be a more favorable window to permanently establish the game in the news and allow it to benefit from maximum exposure.
A new preview expected in June
This postponement does not, however, mean a temporary disappearance from the media radar. Xbox has confirmed that a major new preview of Fable will be shown during the Xbox Games Showcase scheduled for June 7. The event should allow us to discover more gameplay and better understand the direction taken by Playground Games for this new version of the franchise.
At this stage, Xbox is also maintaining the platforms already announced: Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5. The title will be available upon launch in Xbox Game Pass.
A prolonged wait, but an intact ambition
The return of Fable is one of the most closely watched projects in the Xbox catalog. Between cult heritage, high player expectations and Microsoft’s strategic repositioning, the reboot carries significant pressure.
With this postponement to February 2027, Xbox is choosing to favor timing rather than a release in an overloaded environment. It now remains to be seen whether this additional wait will allow the studio to deliver the experience capable of sustainably relaunching one of the most emblematic licenses in the Xbox ecosystem.
