This Sunday at Stade du Calvaire, Sporting Group Figeacois won the first round of this Federal 3 32nd final against Sport Athlétique Saint-Sever (34-28). A valuable success but with a taste of unfinished business, as the game slipped away despite long-time control over the match.
In an offensive-oriented and exciting game, both teams entertained the Calvaire audience. However, the Lot team may regret their missed opportunities as they let their lead slip against a tenacious and complete Landais team.
With only a six-point lead before the return match, the qualification remains uncertain.
The match’s start set the tone as Fernandez scored an early penalty in the 8th minute (3-0), showcasing the team’s territorial dominance.
Very dynamic, the “red and black” team took the lead through initiatives led by Legrand and the activity of Estivals. Yet, lack of precision and delayed support hampered their efforts.
On the other side, the Landais demonstrated cold-blooded realism. Claverie, their captain, leveled the score and then took the lead (3-6, 23rd). Figeac’s reaction was timely: Jonte scored in the corner following a yellow card, maintaining a lead (10-6).
While Saint-Sever kept close, Figeacois found a breakthrough early in the second half through Fernandez (17-9, 47th). The turning point followed an interception by Martinez, extending their lead (24-9), leading to a victory (34-28) despite a late scare from Saint-Sever.
In the end, Figeac’s victory was deserved, but they missed out on the bonus point. A solid performance will be crucial in the return match, promising an intense showdown.
REACTION
- Florian Jonte, center and scorer of the first try: “Despite the victory, there is some disappointment. We prepared well for the match and followed instructions. Our mistakes cost us, especially considering we controlled the game. It was evident in the second half as we lacked consistency.”
