Forensic doctor Carlos Casinelli provided a central testimony on Thursday at the San Isidro trial. Diego Maradona reportedly agonized for about twelve hours before his death on November 25, 2020.
The examination of the body and the autopsy revealed several consistent elements: cerebral edema, heart clots, pleural effusion, generalized edema, and signs of hypoxia. According to Casinelli, these markers indicate a progressive agony, rather than a sudden death. The death occurred between 9 am and noon. This estimation clarifies the statements made on Tuesday by his colleague, Federico Corasaniti, who mentioned heart clots compatible with a prolonged ending.
Seven caregivers in the dock
The question of the duration of agony is at the heart of the case. If confirmed, it directly questions the quality of medical care provided in the Tigre residence, where the former number 10 was recovering from neurosurgery. The lawyers of several accused individuals reject this scenario and argue for a natural death, linked to a body weakened by years of excess.
Since mid-April, seven caregivers have been on trial: a doctor, a psychiatrist, a psychologist, and nurses. They are charged with possible intentional homicide and face up to twenty-five years in prison. Each one deflects responsibility onto the other caregivers. The hearings could continue for several more months.
