More than five years after the disappearance of Diego Maradona, new revelations about his last hours are shaking up the case. A second trial has just opened in 2026, calling into question the responsibility of his medical team in still controversial circumstances.
According to several elements of the case, the Argentine legend reportedly suffered for at least 12 hours before his death in November 2020, reigniting suspicions of gross negligence. Already at the heart of a first trial in 2025, the seven members of his medical team – including neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque – are accused of possible manslaughter. However, this initial procedure was annulled after controversy surrounding Judge Julieta Makintach, who filmed the hearings for a documentary, calling into question the impartiality of the trial.
A new trial was officially launched in April 2026 by the San Isidro court, with the accused and charges. This judicial relaunch brings strong media attention back to the case, with the central question remaining unchanged: did the doctors fail in their duty to the point of hastening Maradona’s death? Between emotions, justice, and shadows, this new trial could finally provide answers on the exact circumstances of the disappearance of one of the greatest icons of world football.
