Will he stay? Will he listen? The future of Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is a topic of discussion in German football. The 40-year-old has “no offer on the table” yet, as sporting director Max Eberl revealed after reaching the Champions League semi-finals on DAZN. However, the manager hinted that the record champion is likely to extend Neuer’s contract. “The fitness, mental freshness, the desire for another year – he must symbolize this to some extent, and then we will align things and probably find a solution,” Eberl said after the 4-3 (2-3) quarter-final victory against Real Madrid. “Unless the demands are unrealistic. But honestly, I can’t imagine that.”
Following his stellar performance in the first leg at the Bernabeu, Captain Neuer was once again in the spotlight against Real in Munich, mainly due to his costly mistake leading to Arda Turan’s 1-0 goal in the first minute. “That was a terrible ball from me,” said Neuer about his error – into Turan’s path. “He just took it directly with his top left foot,” Neuer said about Turan, who later scored from a direct free-kick: “He can do it.”
Before the game, Neuer had announced his intention to clarify the question of his future as a footballer as soon as possible. “The sooner, the better, honestly – for me personally too,” said the goalkeeper, who has been playing for Bayern since 2011.
