The agricultural high school of Fontaines Sud Bourgogne, like other schools, participates in the “defense and citizenship class” program.

The “defense and citizenship class” program is an educational project within the Fontaines school. This school year 2025/2026 includes 18 second-year students.

The school has about twenty students forming the defense class supervised by Sébastien Schmitt, with a unique feature – only second-year students are part of this 2026 promo.

The National Gendarmerie of Chalon sur Saône sponsors the promotion, engaging in cohesion activities. Fully integrated into the citizen journey, the defense class has a triple objective: contributing to national cohesion, promoting citizen values, and enhancing attractiveness of military careers.

On Wednesday, April 29, students from the defense class at Fontaines school visited the City Hall of Chalon sur Saône to discover the workings of this governing institution.

They were welcomed by Isabel Paulo, the youth and neighborhood life deputy, along with Noémie, Ambre, and Jeanne, three young elected members of the youth council.

The students explored important areas of the City Hall where decisions are made, including the wedding and reception hall, council chamber, and work rooms.

Isabel Paulo explained the City Hall’s functions and encouraged the students to be curious and engaged citizens, guiding them to explore various professional fields and the importance of their commitment.

The students then visited several rooms of the City Hall to appreciate the architectural splendor of the building.

Their afternoon continued with a visit to the sub-prefecture, where Mr. Olivier Tainturier received them and provided insights into administrative structures and his role as a sub-prefect.

Mr. Tainturier elaborated on his responsibilities, experiences, and the diversity of his career path, engaging with students and answering their questions.

The defense class students acquired valuable knowledge that will benefit them in the future.
