JAKARTA – The European Union’s Foreign Policy Chief, Kaja Kallas, warned that the United States, China, and Russia prefer a fragmented Europe because a united European Union is a geopolitical force capable of challenging the major powers.
Speaking on Sunday at the Lennart Meri conference in Tallinn, the Estonian capital, Kallas stated that the collective strength of the EU was precisely why external forces were trying to weaken it.
“They do not like the European Union; that is very clear,” he said, according to Anadolu (17/5).
“If we are united, if we act together, we are a strong force; we are strong,” he concluded.
His remarks come as European leaders grapple with uncertainty regarding Washington’s long-term commitment to European security.
He argued that it was easier for global powers to deal with individual European countries than negotiate with the bloc as a whole, describing attempts to establish bilateral relationships as part of a broader strategy of “divide and conquer.”
Kallas also urged the EU government to reject pressures that could weaken the European Union, warning that internal divisions could diminish the bloc’s global influence amid increasing geopolitical instability.
“The reason these forces want to dissolve the EU is that we are much stronger when we are united,” he added.
