While AMD equips Mercedes, Intel chooses McLaren: the chip war comes to F1

Intel and McLaren Racing have formalized a strategic partnership agreement which makes Intel the official computing partner of the British team. This agreement encompasses three entities: the McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 team, the Arrow McLaren team in IndyCar and the McLaren F1 Sim Racing team, dedicated to virtual simulation.

Intel processors at the heart of McLaren’s operations

As part of the agreement, Intel Xeon and Intel Core Ultra processors will be deployed to support several critical technical areas within McLaren Racing. These include computational fluid dynamics, aerodynamic analysis, vehicle dynamics simulation, racing strategy analysis, as well as real-time decision systems that connect the McLaren Technology Center in Woking to garages across the global calendar.

The partnership also includes the use of advanced trackside computing to power real-time analytics on race day, as well as artificial intelligence platforms to accelerate design cycles and predictive modeling.

A return of Intel to the F1 paddocks

This merger marks Intel’s return to the Formula 1 environment, after a period of absence. It intervenes in a context where in-depth technological partnerships tend to occupy an increasing place in competition between teams, by integrating infrastructures which go from the factory to the circuit.

Note that competition is also found in this area: AMD is for its part a technological partner of the Mercedes team in Formula 1.

Progressive visibility on the circuits

In terms of communication, the Intel logo will be affixed to McLaren Formula 1 single-seaters from the next Montreal Grand Prix. It will also appear on the Arrow McLaren cars in IndyCar during the Freedom 250 in Washington DC this year, then at the Indy 500 in 2027. From next season, the brand will also be visible on the virtual car of the McLaren F1 Sim Racing team as well as on the simulator used during the public events.
