It was during this mother-daughter luncheon organized by the sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha at Spelman College that Angelina Jolie, 50, was present alongside her daughter Zahara, 21, when she took the mic to pay tribute to her in front of a group of women. What could have been just a ceremonial speech turned into a public declaration of love, filmed and widely shared, notably by Entertainment Tonight, allowing us to witness this beautiful speech. An uncommon sight in a family that, despite its media exposure, closely guards its intimate moments.

“‘Our love is a found love’: Zahara very tender with her mother Angelina Jolie”

Zahara, recently rumored to be engaged, immediately stated that it was difficult for her to find her words, as reported by Hello! magazine. “Not because I don’t value them, but because my mother and I have a unique, almost fusion-like relationship that is hard to put into words.” Adopted in Ethiopia at the age of six months, she went on to name this special bond: “Our love is a found love. I was adopted at 6 months and was given the most special and loving people as brothers and sisters, with a mother who raised us with values of mutual aid, kindness, and personal growth.” She refers here to her brothers and sisters Maddox, 24, Pax, 22, Shiloh, 19, and the 17-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox, all very close. And she continued: “She is the most selfless, loving, and understanding woman I have the chance to call my mom.”

“Growing up in the spotlight, with Angelina Jolie always present”

Zahara also mentioned the particular challenge of growing up in the media whirlwind that surrounds her family, especially recently, since she and some of her siblings decided to drop the last name “Pitt” and only retain their mother’s name. “With the public life we lead, it can be difficult to find those special intimate moments without being overwhelmed by the many eyes on us.” But, she says, her mother never let that be an obstacle. “It has never prevented my mom from being curious about everything I learn at Spelman, asking about sorority life and my experiences. My family welcomes the new and strives to understand these organizations that make sense in my life.” Zahara also revealed that she enjoyed taking care of her younger siblings, reflecting the kindness her mother had always shown them, and she carried these qualities with her to university. She concluded her speech with a powerful quote: “I am a strong woman because a strong woman raised me. Thank you, mom.”
