Her name may not be known to the general public at a time when the most popular celebrities in the world are walking the red carpet. However, since 2022, Iris Knobloch has been heading one of the biggest cinema events: the Cannes Film Festival. The 79th edition is set to begin on May 12.

Born in 1963 in Munich, Iris Knobloch is the daughter of German politician Charlotte Knobloch. Initially focusing on law rather than cinema, she studied law at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and earned her doctorate while also completing a Master of Laws at the University of New York. Her career took a new turn in 1996 while working as a lawyer at Norr, Stiefenhofer & Lutz and O’Melveny & Myers in Munich, Los Angeles, and New York.

Starting her career at Warner Bros at the age of 33, Iris Knobloch moved up the ranks to become the president of Warner Bros France after working in various leadership roles for 10 years. She achieved success by distributing the Oscar-winning film, “The Artist,” in 2020, before eventually becoming the president of Warner Media for France, Germany, Benelux, Austria, and Switzerland.

In 2021, she founded I2PO with the Pinault family and banker Matthieu Pigasse, focusing on raising funds for mergers and acquisitions in the private sector. This led to a merger with Deezer in 2022.

With years of experience, Iris Knobloch took on a new role in March 2022 as the president of the iconic Cannes Film Festival, succeeding Pierre Lescure. Her mandate of three years was renewed in January 2025, allowing her to cover the editions of 2026, 2027, and 2028.

Recognized for her commitment to European values and support for the film industry, Iris Knobloch emphasizes diversity and innovation in creative industries.

As the first female president of the Cannes Film Festival, Iris Knobloch has been a strong advocate for women’s equality and recognition. The editions of the Cannes Film Festival under her leadership have highlighted female directors and gender equality in the industry.

Acknowledged for her contributions to cinema and support for emerging talents, Iris Knobloch was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters during the Festival de Cannes.

The 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, held from May 12 to 23, focuses on international diversity and emerging creatives, with 8 debut films in the official selection and representation from 141 countries. The festival aims to convey messages and showcase diverse worldviews. Additionally, 5 female directors, including French filmmakers, will be competing.
