Barcelona Misses Out on ‘Remontada’ After Loss to Atletico Madrid
Initially exciting and then reduced to ten men, FC Barcelona let slip the opportunity for another “remontada” against Antoine Griezmann’s Atletico Madrid on Tuesday (2-1), as they returned to the Champions League semi-finals hoping to progress further.
According to coach Hansi Flick, Barcelona did not need a miracle, just a “perfect match.” However, they were only good and their chances were dashed by a red card to Eric Garcia, the 13th in the last ten years in the Champions League, ending Barcelona’s hopes.
Despite outperforming their opponents in efficiency, reigning Spanish champions Barcelona fell short once again, just like in 2014, 2016, and earlier in March in the Spanish Cup semi-finals (lost 4-0 in the first leg, won 3-0 in the second leg).
Yamal Provides Hope…
It seems that Atletico Madrid, back in the semi-finals for the first time since 2017, is Barcelona’s kryptonite, excelling in punishing their ultra-offensive approach. Lamine Yamal could have made an impact early in the game, but missed the opportunity, eventually scoring the opening goal (1-0).
Unperturbed by the pressure, 18-year-old winger Yamal continued his mission by scoring a solo goal three minutes later (4′, 1-0).
A Strong Start Cut Short
Yamal nearly set up a goal for Dani Olmo, but was denied by the goalkeeper. Soon after, Griezmann attempted to level the score, only to be saved by Gerard Martin (22′).
…And Torres Strikes Again
With the game tied, Ferran Torres brought both teams level with a fantastic finish (24′, 2-0). Barcelona came close to scoring again, but Musso denied them twice (25′).
Lookman Dampens Barcelona’s Hopes
As Barcelona thought they had the upper hand, Atletico Madrid capitalized on Griezmann, Llorente, and Lookman’s speed and skill to take the lead (30′, 2-1).
Barcelona’s hopes for a comeback were shattered as they failed to confirm their strong start, missing a penalty claim and having a goal disallowed for offside (55′).
The match ended symbolizing Barcelona’s season, with a fragile defense and Garcia’s red card sealing their fate (79′). Barcelona must react or adapt to dream of a successful European campaign next season.
