Between October 2023 and December 2025, more than 38,000 women and girls have been killed in Gaza, victims of Israeli aerial bombardments and ground military operations. Among them, more than 22,000 women and 16,000 girls, averaging at least 47 women and girls killed each day, as announced by UN Women spokesperson Sofia Calltorp in Geneva on Friday, April 17. As of December 27, the Gaza Health Ministry, under Hamas authority, had recorded 71,266 deaths since the start of the conflict.

“The women and girls represent a much higher percentage of the casualties than in previous conflicts in Gaza,” stated Sofia Calltorp, emphasizing that these individuals are still “plunged into horrific suffering despite the ceasefire declared in October 2025.” She also mentioned that nearly 11,000 women and girls have suffered injuries so severe that they only survive with permanent disabilities. Additionally, over 730 people have reportedly been killed in the last six months. Sofia Calltorp expressed concern over the lack of gender and age-disaggregated data on the victims.

Nearly 790,000 women are in a critical state of food insecurity due to forced or restricted displacements, limited access to water, food, healthcare, and humanitarian aid. Sofia Calltorp urged that women and girls “must be at the heart of response efforts” in the humanitarian crisis. Over a million women and girls have been displaced multiple times during the conflict, with more than 790,000 facing critical or catastrophic food insecurity, according to UN Women.

The Gaza Health Ministry reported a total of 72,345 people killed in the territory since the bloody attacks initiated by Hamas in Israel on October 7, 2023, sparking a high-intensity war in the enclave. In December 2023, South Africa brought a case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing Israel of committing “genocide” in Gaza. In January 2024, in a landmark decision, the ICJ called on Israel to prevent any acts of genocide, warning of a “real and imminent risk” of “irreparable prejudice” to the Palestinians.
