Over 1,500 Russian drones and missiles have struck Ukraine in the past 48 hours, notably targeting the capital, Kiev. This is one of the most massive aerial attacks in the past four years. The toll stands at a minimum of 16 dead and around forty wounded.

The buzzing of a Shahed drone, then impact. Kiev (Ukraine) was under the Russian firestorm on the night of May 13-14. In 48 hours, 1,500 drones and over fifty missiles were launched by Moscow (Russia), according to the Ukrainian air force. The anti-aircraft defense failed to intercept them all.

In the heart of the capital, a building was hit. Nine floors and 18 apartments were instantly destroyed. “A missile was launched from below. I was in the hallway at that moment, it exploded and I was thrown backwards,” recounts a wounded man still stunned by the blast. Caught in their sleep, other residents were trapped under thick blocks of concrete. Rescuers tried to free them with the help of locals. “I heard a woman’s cry as a last hope. I rushed to her and started digging in the rubble. She was trapped under a concrete slab,” tells a young man.

At least 16 people were killed and around forty injured in the massive attack, one of the worst since the war began. Russia has resumed its offensive, barely ending a very brief three-day ceasefire. For the residents, there has been no lasting ceasefire for over four years. “This ceasefire was just a bluff. We’ve heard this kind of statement from Putin before. We can’t trust him. The war continues and it’s insidious,” criticizes Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kiev.

Peace talks between Kiev and Moscow have been at a standstill since the beginning of the conflict in the Middle East.
