The discovery of a bomb in Colombes led to the evacuation of 15,000 residents, involving deminers and authorities for a unique controlled explosion.

In Colombes, Hauts-de-Seine, neighborhood life experienced a sudden upheaval this Sunday, April 19, 2026. The recent discovery of an explosive device dating back to World War II, found on Champarons Street, disrupted this lively urban enclave with a rare demining operation, requiring the evacuation of thousands of residents and the mobilization of significant human and logistical resources. A day unlike any other, where caution, reactivity, and solidarity were key.

With patrols, reception centers, and aerial surveillance, the mobilization matched the threat. Why such an operation? How did it unfold? What resources were deployed and what lessons can be learned? A dive into the heart of a local crisis managed minute by minute.

Controlled explosion in Colombes: 15,000 residents evacuated facing a historic threat

April 19, 2026 will remain etched in Colombes’ collective memory. From dawn, over 7,000 residents were invited, then forced, to leave their homes within a radius of 450 meters around the site, with an extension of the perimeter up to one kilometer, impacting a total of about 15,000 people in a municipality of over 90,000 inhabitants. In the background: the discovery on April 10 of a 225 kg bomb containing 110 kg of explosives, a direct legacy of the last global conflict. Affected residents received official notifications, including through the prefecture’s “FR-Alert” system, reminding them of the rules to follow: leave the premises by 7 am, carefully close shutters, windows, and curtains, and move their vehicles out of the danger zone.

The operation, initially scheduled to end at 7:00 pm, aimed primarily to neutralize the bomb by extracting its detonator. Unfortunately, despite the expertise of the deminers from the central laboratory of the police prefecture, the attempts to defuse the bomb did not succeed. As specified by the prefecture of police, a second technical scenario was necessary: placing the device in a two-meter-deep pit, followed by a controlled underground explosion. A partly characterized risky operation requiring a high level of preparedness, as stated by Prefect Alexandre Brugière.

To prevent any incident, nearly 800 agents – police, gendarmerie, firefighters, Red Cross, civil protection, and municipal services – were mobilized. The evacuated neighborhoods were monitored from the ground and the air, with the dual objective of ensuring security against a possible explosion and preventing opportunistic burglaries. In terms of transportation, six RATP bus lines were temporarily suspended, illustrating the regional impact of the event.

Logistic support and solidarity: reception centers, volunteers, and general mobilization

If technique and security were at the core of the operation, human issues also took unprecedented importance. Since daybreak, the municipalities of Colombes, Asnières-sur-Seine, and Bois-Colombes opened five reception centers to offer evacuees a warm and secure place throughout the day. Vulnerable individuals were not forgotten: 220 frail or mobility-restricted people benefited from special accommodation with camp beds, according to the authorities’ figures. In these improvised spaces, solidarity quickly took shape: volunteers from the civil protection and municipal agents distributed drinks and biscuits to families, trying to bring some comfort in this tense parenthesis. To occupy the children, comics, hoops, and Kapla games were offered, demonstrating the attention paid to everyone’s well-being.

The precise coordination of rescue resources and transparent communication via official channels (SMS, municipal announcements, and local social networks) were praised by many residents. Police surveillance, supported by aerial surveillance, maintained a calming atmosphere while reassuring about the security of the deserted neighborhoods. Over the hours, the patience and discipline of the residents contributed to the logistical success of this extraordinary intervention, until the restoration of security and the gradual return to normal by early evening, with the official authorization to return home, notified via SMS.
