At the gates of the Champions League, OL naturally attracts players. An international Mexican midfielder is currently being proposed to the Rhône club by a former Lyon player.

OL is getting closer to the Champions League

As OL gets closer to qualification for the Champions League, the club’s management is working to strengthen the team for the next season. They are looking for experienced players at the top European level to have a successful campaign, similar to the one in the group stage of the Europa League this season.

Paulo Fonseca’s team recorded 7 victories and only one defeat, scoring 18 goals and conceding only 5 in 8 matches. They finished first out of 36 teams.

Transfer Market: Carlos Rodriguez pushed towards OL

Third in the Ligue 1 standings, with 3 matches left in the season, Olympique Lyonnais is provisionally in the Champions League. While awaiting Lyon’s qualification confirmation, Carlos Rodriguez (29 years old) is being proposed to Matthieu Louis-Jean. He is a defensive midfielder playing for Cruz Azul in Mexico, his home country.

His profile is recommended by César Delgado, a former player of the Rhône club (between 2008 and 2011). “I would like Carlos Rodriguez to come to Lyon, to my team,” he declared to El Universal Deportes. According to “Chelito,” his compatriot would be well advised to join the Gones to experience European competition.

“Of course, he will have to adapt, as the style of play is very different, but if he wants to play at the highest level, the French championship offers prestige and the opportunity to play in the Champions League. I hope he will listen and see it as an opportunity,” said the retired forward in 2019.

Does the Mexican’s profile fit the Lyon project?

An international Mexican since 2019, Carlos Rodriguez has 69 caps. He is under contract with Cruz Azul until June 2029. According to Transfermarkt, he is valued at €5.5 million. However, his age could be an obstacle to his arrival in France, as OL prefers young talented players with high potential for future transfers.

In addition, his adaptation to European football could take too long, considering he has only played in Mexico, apart from his beginnings at CD Toledo in the Spanish second division from September 2017 to June 2018.
